God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Priest.

Jesus is our Priest

Old Testament priests served as mediators between humans and God. It was the priests who offered sacrifices on behalf of the people. Jesus is our Mediator and our High Priest:

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5).

Hebrews explains how Jesus is our ultimate High Priest and how His priesthood is far superior to the Levitical priesthood of the Old Testament. The writer of Hebrews also tells how the Old Testament system of priests served to foreshadow the ministry of Jesus. The Levitical priesthood of Aaron’s line was not intended to continue forever. Jesus’ priesthood is eternal.

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” (Heb. 4:15)

Therefore

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Heb. 4:16)

“For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,” (Eph. 2:14 NKJV)

Jesus is our Peace

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Jesus Himself is our peace 

The person and work of Jesus Christ is God’s ultimate provision of peace for us. By grace through faith in Jesus Christ, God made it possible for all people to live at peace with one another. It also means that we can be reconciled to God and experience peace with Him:

“Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us” (Romans 5:1, NLT).

Therefore

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27 ESV)

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7)

Jesus is our hope

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:3-6)

Mighty One

Mighty is dined in the dictionary as: having great power or influence— powerful, influential, significant, strong important, potent, prominent, heavy-duty, senior, top, great, famous, capable, distinguished, outstanding, celebrated, able, renowned, dominant, illustrious, notorious, efficient, notable, competent, effective, high-level, famed, eminent, prestigious, robust, noteworthy, noble, vigorous, authoritarian, dynamic, energetic, forceful, high-powered, preeminent.

“The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets.” (Psalm 50:1 NLT)

Mighty God

 Colossians 1 says that Jesus Christ was not just present at creation, but He is the origin of everything created. “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth” (v. 16). Bethlehem simply represented a change of address for Jesus for thirty-three years.

 Therefore

As Mighty God, Jesus will judge all the people of the earth (Rev. 18:8, 10). Then He will sit on His eternal throne and reign in great power and authority (Rev. 11:15–17; 12:10). Every creature in heaven and on earth will bow down and worship Him. Heaven will ring with the shouting: “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God” for He was slain, and He alone is worthy “to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise” forever and ever (Rev. 5:12–13; 19:1).

Messiah

Messiah: from Hebrew mashiaḥ, “anointed”— in Judaism, the expected king of the Davidic line who would deliver Israel from foreign bondage and restore the glories of its golden age. The Greek New Testament’s translation of the term, christos, became the accepted Christian designation and title of Jesus of Nazareth, indicative of the principal character and function of His ministry.  

Jesus of Nazareth was and is the prophesied Messiah

“The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” (John 4:25–26 ESV) C

Throughout the New Testament, we see proof that Jesus is the Chosen One 

“These [miracles] are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

“Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (Matt. 16:16 NIV) 

The ultimate proof that Jesus is Messiah is His resurrection from the dead

“And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” (Acts 10:39-43 ESV)

Mediator

 ·      Dictionary definition“one who mediates” or more specifically, “one that mediates between parties at variance.”

The word carries the idea of someone who is a go-between for two arguing parties, usually through some sort of compromise.

·      Bible definition: The biblical word does not involve compromise but instead holds a deeper and richer meaning. In the Bible, Christ as Mediator reconciled man and God and is the only One who can mediate to bring about a relationship between God and man. 

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6 NIV)

Therefore

Jesus’ role as mediator is linked to His sacrificial death on the cross. He is the only One who could bring reconciliation between man and God.

“For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Tim. 2:5)

“and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.” (Heb. 12:24)

“They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” (Rev. 17:14)

Lord of lords

The phrase lord of lords is used by itself in Scripture twice and refers to God the Father.

“For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.” (Deut. 10:17 NIV)

Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:3 NIV). 

God’s preeminence over other rulers

Isaiah 40:23–24 says that the Lord brings “princes to nothing” and makes earth’s rulers “emptiness.” The mere breath of the Lord will “carry them off like stubble.” Daniel’s vision of the son of man in Daniel 7:13–14 is of one whom he calls “the Ancient of Days” whose everlasting dominion is over all people, nations and languages. In the New Testament, we get a better view of the One these passages refer to.

Jesus – Lord of lords

“On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.” (Rev. 19:16)

In the end, all other rulers will be conquered or abolished, and He alone will reign supreme as King and Lord of all the earth.

There is no higher authority. Jesus reign over all things is absolute and inviolable. God raised Him from the dead and placed Him over all things.

“far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all” (Eph. 1:21-23).

Names of God

“You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.” (Acts 10:36)

Lord of all – Jesus

The name “Lord of all” (or “Lord over all”) occurs in two verses in the New Testament. The context of both verses shows that Jesus is Lord of Jews and Gentiles (non-Jews). In the more general sense He is Lord of all human beings.

“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him. (Rom. 10:12 NIV)

Therefore

“Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.” (Rom. 9:5 NIV)
