Know my heart and thoughts, O God
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalms 139:23-24)
What you think about is very important!
What you think about it is an indicator of who you actually are. The Bible says it this way, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Prov. 23:7). In other words, what you think about is who you actually are. An old saying puts it this way: “You aren’t what you think you are, but what you think, you are!” So, true!
Work on what you think about
You do have control over what you think about and the Bible says you must take every thought captive. That means you can do something about all thoughts that are not well-pleasing to God, before they enter your heart, and before they become a part of you.
“…take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:5)
What you put in is what you get out
A big part of what you think about is what you feed into your brain (mind) in the first place.Your mind is like a computer in that it produces only what is programmed into it. For instance, if you watch a lot of television, secular news sources, visit social media, watch unwholesome movies, you will soon be thinking along their negative, even destructive, mental pathways.
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Rom. 8:5-6 ESV)
Be careful!
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Prov. 4:23 ESV)
Therefore…
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Phil. 4:8 ESV)
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14 ESV)
