Apathy
“Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God.” (Rev. 3:2 ESV)
Apathy: Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference. Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness. Want of feeling; absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement; insensibility; indifference.
Warned many times
One account of the Titanic says that a ship close by warned them six times that they were headed for an iceberg and would sink. On the sixth time the Captain of the Titanic signaled back, “Shut up I’m busy.” God continually reveals His truths to us in many ways—through His creation (Psalms 19:1-6), through His messengers (Heb 1:14) and through life’s circumstances (Rom. 8:28), but we are often apathetic (we don’t care), we’re distracted (our eyes are on electronic devices), or we’re just too busy with the cares of the world to notice that He’s talking to us in a small voice.
Dull of hearing
“About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,” (Heb. 5:11-12 ESV)
Watch out!
“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” (Rev. 3:15-16 ESV)
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Tim. 4:3-4 ESV)
“The way of a sluggard is like a hedge of thorns, but the path of the upright is a level highway.” (Prov. 15:19 ESV)
Therefore…
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Eph. 6:19-12 ESV)
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” (Rom. 12:9-13 ESV)
