Bridegroom

Names of God

“And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.” (Matt. 9:15 ESV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Bridegroom.

The Bridegroom is Jesus

The word bridegroom is used often in the Bible as a metaphor for God, specifically for Jesus Christ.

The Bride is the Church

The church is likened to a bride with Christ as her bridegroom. The church, the Bride of Christ, is the entire body of believers throughout the ages. All who have trusted the Lord and received salvation by grace through faith are collectively His Bride. This analogy exists in several New Testament passages. Paul gives believers instructions about marriage, saying, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Eph. 5:25). Paul also refers to the church as a virgin waiting for her bridegroom (2 Cor. 11:2) and uses the relationship between Christ and the church as an example of the importance of wives’ submission to their husbands (Eph. 5:24).

Therefore

We await for the Groom to come, and to join the “wedding supper of the Lamb” (Rev. 19:7) when we, as members of the Church, will live forever with Jesus.

“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Rev. 21:2)

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.” (Rev. 22:17)
