“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.” (Psalms 127:3-5 ESV)

Many years ago, I spoke with a newly married couple about their plans for the future. They told me they were deeply concerned about global threats as well as the other scary things looming on the horizon. Therefore, they had made a decision not to have children because they couldn’t bare subjecting them to such a terrible and scary future. That’s been over 50 years ago now, and yes, many threats have come and gone, and they are alone with no heirs. All because of fear!

it’s no accident!

Don’t worry or fear for your children/grandchildren because the world they are facing is evil, scary, destructive, or even anti-God! The age they were born in is no accident and is part of God’s divine plan for the time He has placed them in (see Acts 17:26).

Planned by God

Throughout history God has created and called people to live in the exact moment in time they were in. Their lives weren’t a coincidence or an accident. Each were placed in the time that they were in because of God’s sovereign plan.

Examples throughout the Bible

·      He created Daniel to handle the lions den.

·      He created Moses to handle Pharaoh.

·      He created the three Hebrew children to handle the fiery furnace.

·      He created Joseph to handle being sold into slavery.

·      He created David to handle Goliath.

·      He created Esther to handle Haman.

It’s still true today!

He knows that your offspring can handle whatever challenges they will face in their lives, and He has created them specifically for it!

Don’t be frightened

Be happy that God chose you to parent their generation who may be facing some huge challenges in the future that will certainly come their way.

Rise up to the challenge and prepare them!

1.     Teach them to remain hopeful and not to be fearful and disheartened by the state of the world.

2.     Train them up in the authority of God’s Word.

3.     Train them to understand that God will help them do something about whatever they are faced with.

4.     Teach them to walk by faith, moment by moment, in God's power, knowing that He is in control.

Therefore

Don’t let your fears steal the greatness God has placed within your children. Work hard to raise Daniels, Davids, Esthers, and Josephs to become strong soldiers for Him! He's raising up an army to drive back the darkness and make Himself known throughout the earth. Even though it may be difficult to imagine your children as anything besides little ones that you need to protect from anything that could be hard on them, they were born for such a time as this! (see Esther 4:13-14).

Trust God about that!

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.” (Eph. 3:20 BLT)

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12 NIV)

 Many years ago, when I was very young and just starting out in full-time ministry, my mentor, Dr. Al Metsker, Executive Director of Kansas City Youth For Christ, told me, “The Word of God does the work of God!” He went on to explain that it must be the foundation of any ministry that will succeed to do God’s work. He was right! The Bible said, “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.” (2 Tim. 4:2). And Jesus said it like this: “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matt. 4:4 KJV).

 Therefore

 “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” (1 Peter 1:23 ESV)

 “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isa. 55:10-11)

“And I will still be carrying you when you are old. Your hair will turn gray, and I will still carry you. I made you, and I will carry you to safety.” (Isa. 46:4)

My children made me promise I’d retire at age 75. I really hadn’t planned on retiring; it was still a few years away. But I agreed because they seemed so concerned about my future, and it made them happy when I said, "Yes." Actually, the reason why I hadn’t given much thought to retiring is that I loved the company I had formed so many years earlier, as well as my employees, my customers, and even the industry we were a part of. And I was shocked at how fast the years flew by, but when the day arrived, I kept my word as promised. Afterwards, however, I felt like I still had vision, energy, and lots of things I still wanted to do. So, I started a new company and also started a non-profit Christian ministry to serve the industry I had just come out of. Yes, I had promised my children I would retire from my current company, and I did. But I never promised not to start something new afterwards, so I did. And now, I’m busy again, and I'm feeling productive and wonderful. 

And Another thing about retiring

I can’t find anywhere in the Bible where we are told to retire when old. In fact, just the opposite: God’s people continued to do His will even into old age. Moses and Aaron did most of their work leading the Hebrew children out of bondage to the promised land well into their 80's, and Moses remained healthy and active for God until age 120 (see Deut. 34:7).

“Exodus 7:6-9 “So Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded them. Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron was eighty-three when they made their demands to Pharaoh. Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Pharaoh will demand, ‘Show me a miracle.’ When he does this, say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down in front of Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.” (Exo. 7:6-9)

Therefore

Even in old age you can still flourish and produce fruit.  

“But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the LORD’s own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, “The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!” (Psalms 92:12-14)

“Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.” (Job 12:12)

“Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is obtained by following a righteous path.” (Prov. 16:31)

“I thought, ‘Those who are older should speak, for wisdom comes with age.’” (Job 32:7)

A prayer for the aged

“Now that I am old and my hair is gray, don’t leave me, God. I must tell the next generation about your power and greatness. God, your goodness reaches far above the skies. You have done wonderful things. God, there is no one like you.” (Psalms 71:18-19)

“Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.” (Rom, 8:6 NLT)

Have you ever noticed that your mind seems to have a will of its own and doesn’t always do what you want it to? You sometimes find yourself thinking in strange places. For example, when you want to pray your thoughts often stray. When you want to study God’s Word, your thoughts wander. When that happens, you need to use both the Holy Spirit and God’s Word to help you get your mind under control. Here’s how.

First: Let the Spirit control your mind  

If you try to control wrongful or wandering thoughts with your own power, you will fail because your sinful nature is a powerful hard-to-resist inner force that will continue to fight you. As a born-again Christian, however, you have a powerful advantage to help you do what’s humanly impossible. You have God’s Holy Spirit within you to give you power to recognize wrong thoughts, capture them, and bring them under the control and into obedience to Christ!  

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor. 10:5 NIV)

Second, obey and trust the Word of God

Not only do you have the Holy Spirit to control your thoughts, knowing, obeying and applying the Word of God will enable you to know the truth and will set you free!

Jesus says, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32 GNT).

The above passage has two parts

The first part says, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples”. And the second part says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The second part of this verse is quoted by many people and groups everywhere, and it’s often printed on the buildings of major universities. But you rarely, if ever, see the first part of the verse quoted where it says you have to learn and obey God’s Word. Unfortunately, people want freedom without God’s truth. But the fact is there is no freedom without truth. And there is no truth without God’s Word!

Therefore

Using the power of the Holy Spirit within you, along with knowing, applying, and obeying God’s Word, as well as filling your mind with his truth, the easier it will be to direct your thoughts where you want them to go. This will please God and will lead to life and peace (Rom. 8:6).  

“The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” (Gal. 6:8)

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19 NIV)

The word “repent” is a very misunderstood word!

Most people, when they think of the word “repent”, picture a scene from an old movie with a weird person holding a sign on a street corner and yelling “repent” in a loud angry voice at people going by. It’s implied that repent means to stop doing some kind of evil behavior, or sin. Even though this may be true in many cases the word “repent” simply means to change direction. To go the opposite way. Another word that says the same thing is the word “turn” which means to turn around. It’s like seeing someone about to go into a ditch and you warn them to turn away from it. It’s a very good thing when they do, and it’s terrible when they don’t.

The Bible definition

In the Bible the word repentance literally means “the act of changing one’s mind.” True biblical repentance goes beyond remorse, regret, or feeling bad about one’s sin. It involves more than merely turning away from sin. Eerdmans Bible Dictionary includes this definition of repentance: “In its fullest sense it is a term for a complete change of orientation involving a judgment upon the past and a deliberate redirection for the future.”

Ongoing repentance

Repentance is not necessarily about when you stop doing bad things—that’s actually the result of repentance. It simply means you used to think one way and now you think another way. It is a necessary part of change. And that’s a good thing! When reading and studying the Bible daily, you are often confronted about changes you should make in your life The sooner you “repent” and turn towards God, the better your spiritual growth will be.

Repentance is a necessary part of following Christ

There is a problem, even rampant today, of easy believeism, where you are told to simply believe (or receive) Jesus, without having to turn away from sin. And that’s dangerous because just believing is not enough; even demons believe and are not saved! “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror” (James 2:19 NLT). Jesus said clearly that you cannot be saved unless you turn away from sin and towards Christ. “I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (Luke 13:3 NIV) 

Therefore

Repentance is rethinking your life and changing your direction to match how Jesus thinks. It’s when you turn from darkness to light and towards doing what matter to God. True repentance results in a radical and persistent pursuit of holy living, walking with God in obedience to His commands.  

“They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.” (Acts 16:31 NLT)

Continue to pray for friends and loved ones!

Remember, God is faithful, and He will continue to answer your prayers for them throughout their lives. He wants them to be saved!

“In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish” (Matt. 18:14 NIV).

Pray for and train your children in righteousness  

Pray they will personally place their trust in Christ while they’re young. If they happen to stray, however, don’t lose hope; trust God to rescue them and bring them back. “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Prov. 22:6 KJV)

Therefore

“Thus says the LORD: “Keep justice, and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my righteousness be revealed.” (Isa. 56:1 ESV)

“He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 thess. 5:24 ESV)

“The LORD has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.” (Psalm 98:2 ESV)

For many years, I could not speak to my mother about Jesus! I really wanted to, but she forbade me from talking about God to her. It broke my heart! All I could do was pray for her, and I did. Then, many years later, she became seriously ill and was admitted to the hospital, where she was told she didn’t have long to live. I then asked her once more to please allow me to share the good news of salvation through Jesus with her, and she finally agreed. She listened intently as I shared the Scriptures with her, and then she prayed with me to receive Christ as her own personal savior. As soon as she finished the prayer, she smiled and said, “I’m so happy! Now we must tell your dad about how to receive Jesus, too." I was happy and surprised! My mother, who wouldn’t even allow me to speak about Jesus to her for so many years, now wanted to share Him with my dad! What a change in her thinking!

Why the difference?

My mother was now a brand-new person inside, changed instantly by Christ’s Holy Spirit! The Bible says, “Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new” (CEV). Before, she was a “natural” person, and things of God were foolishness to her. “The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Cor. 2:14 ESV). Now, as a regenerated person, she finally “got” it. She had received a new understanding; the Bible calls it having the mind of Christ, which is a brand new spiritual way of thinking. “But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Cor. 2:16 NIV)

Don’t give up!

It’s so easy to feel frustrated when loved ones refuse to let you tell them about Jesus. I have to admit I had almost given up on my mother; so many years had gone by with no change. but God did not give up! He heard my prayers and answered!

Therefore

“The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” (2 Pet. 3:9 NLT)

Little Foxes Can Do Big Damage to the Vine

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. (Eph. 4:31-32 NLT)

Forgiveness reinforces a marriage

Susan and I used to live near an older couple who quarreled loudly. They were really nice to talk to separately, but when together, they seemed mad at each other all the time. It was sad to watch them behave this way. Something obviously had happened to get them to such a sour place in their marriage. I suspect that it began many years earlier with some small disagreement or two that didn’t get resolved and just grew worse from there. The Bible says, “Little foxes spoil the vine” (Song of Solomon 2:15). The lesson is, of course, that little, seemingly insignificant things can cause grossly disproportionate damage. This is especially true in marriage; you must constantly guard yourselves against little foxes, such as small disagreements, which can grow destructive.

Someone asked Ruth Bell Graham what she did to have such a great marriage with Billy, and she replied, “Lots and lots of forgiveness!” This is a great answer! When Susan and I got married over fifty years ago, we made an agreement with each other to never go to sleep at night without settling any disagreement, to forgive each other for anything, and to love each other as Christ loved and served the church. The Bible has a lot to say about that.

“Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.” (Eph. 4.26 NLT)

“And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. And we are members of his body. As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Eph. 5:21-33 NLT)

Therefore

“Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” (Gen. 2:18 NLT)

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (Gen. 1:24 ESV)

“Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.” (Prov. 16:22 ESV)

John Wayne famously said, “You can’t fix stupid!” He was right in most respects because the verse at the top says, “The instruction of fools is folly.” Why is this true? What exactly is folly? And is there any hope or “fix” for people lacking good sense? Let’s take a look.

Folly is wrongheadedness

According to the Bible Dictionary, “Folly is the opposite of wisdom. It is not imbecility, insanity, or error. It is wrongheadedness. It has to do with practical insights into the nature of things that lead to success or failure in life. Wisdom and folly in the Bible rest on the principle of adjustment to a higher law for a practical purpose. Folly involves rejection or disregard of the revealed moral and spiritual values on which life is based. The fool sins against his own best interests and rejects God (Psalm 14:1).”

Having good sense is an essential quality in life

The dictionary defines having good sense as sound judgment often instinctive or unlearned. Some synonyms are insight, judgment, logic, practicality, prudence, rationality, wisdom, good reasoning, gumption, horse sense, levelheadedness, reasonableness, and sensibleness.

Why it’s essential

If you don’t have good sense, you can’t make good judgments about things. You make stupid mistakes and bad decisions. This is what John Wayne said you cannot fix. And he was right because you can’t fix it yourself, but God can and tells you how!

Proverbs to the rescue

There are some great promises in the Bible about how studying and applying the proverbs of Solomon will increase insight and will give prudence to the simple (Prov. 1:4). In other words, Proverbs can “fix stupid”.

Proverbs impart prudence to the simple

“These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel, for gaining wisdom and discipline, for comprehending words of insight, and for receiving instruction in wise living and in righteousness, justice, and equity. To impart prudence to the simple and knowledge and discretion to the young, let the wise listen and gain instruction, and the discerning acquire wise counsel by understanding the proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.” (Prov. 1:1-7 NIV)

Therefore

“To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, for my mouth will utter truth.” (Prov. 8:4-7 ESV)

A challenge to grow good sense

Read proverbs every day! The book of Proverbs contains 31 chapters (one a day for most months). Each chapter contains 20–35 wise sayings. Read them. Meditate (think deeply) on what they say. And apply them to your daily life. As you do, you will gain what is known as “the wisdom of Solomon,” and that will help you in every area of your life!
