Indescribable Gift

Names of God

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” (2 Cor. 9:15 NIV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Indescribable Gift.

Indescribable Gift

The above title for Jesus is made up of two words, Indescribable and Gift.

·      Indescribable, as used in the above passage, is defined as inexpressible (beyond words); indescribable (inexplicable), impossible to estimate.

·      Gift, in the New Testament, has many meanings. A gift was given by the priest as an offering to God (Heb 5:1). The magi presented gifts to the infant Jesus (Matt 2:11). God's righteousness is a gift (Rom 5:17); God gave the gift of redemption to humankind (Eph 2:8). Those who have tasted the heavenly gift have been enlightened (Heb 6:4 ). And Paul is a servant of the gospel by the gift of God’s grace (Eph 3:7 ).

Jesus is the gift of God

Before salvation, we were slaves to sin and destined for death. But through faith in Jesus Christ, we received the gift of God, which is the salvation of souls unto eternal life: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:16–17).

Therefore

“The LORD is great, and to be praised highly, though his greatness is indescribable.” (Psalm 145:3)

Emmanuel- God with us

Names of God

“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us.’” (Isa. 7:14 NLT)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Emmanuel.

Emmanuel - God with us

The word Emmanuel is a Hebrew name which means, “God with us.” Sometimes you will also see it translated to Immanuel. Both are the same word, just different ways of spelling. Emmanuel appears twice in the Old Testament (Isa. 7:14, 8:8) and once in the New Testament (Matt. 1:23).

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” (Matt. 1:23)

“He will pass through Judah, He will overflow and pass over, He will reach up to the neck; And the stretching out of his wings Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel.” (Isa. 8:8 NKJV)

Therefore

The concept of “God with us” embodies all of the promises God made to Israel and to everyone who will put their trust in Him.

“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.’” (Rev. 21:3)

I Am

Names of God

“Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58 ESV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is I Am.

I Am — throughout all generations

“Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.” (Exo. 3:13–15)

Jesus said, “I am He”

“That is why I told you that you would die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

Holy Servant

Names of God

“…Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed.” (Acts 4:27b)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Holy Servant.

Holy Servant – Jesus

Jesus was prophesied to be the Servant of the Lord (Zech. 3:8; Isa. 42:1). In the fullness of time he was sent and came not to be ministered to, as a monarch, but to minister as a servant under the law.

Jesus took upon him the form of a servant (Phil. 2:7), the Servant of God, and this is an instance of his amazing humility. He - who is the Son of God, of the same nature with God, and equal to him - voluntarily became the Servant of him. He was chosen of God, in his eternal purposes, to be his Servant; and therefore is called, his Servant elect (Isa. 42:1).

“The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus.” (Acts 3:13)

Therefore

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:5-11)

“Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:30 NLT)

Head of Church

Names of God

“And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,” (Eph. 1:22 NIV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Head of Church.

Head of Church – Jesus

“…Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.” (Eph. 5:23 ESV)

“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” (Col. 1:18 ESV)

Christ is the head of the church because he purchased it

“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,  but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Therefore

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” (1 Cor. 12:27 ESV)

“Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” (Acts 20:28 ESV)

Great High Priest

Names of God

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.” (Heb. 4:14)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Great High Priest.

Greit High Priest – Jesus

In the Book of Hebrews Jesus is referred to as High Priest. The word “priest” carries a couple of primary meanings. First, it means one who mediates in religious services. And secondly, it means one who is holy or set apart to perform those services. In the Old Testament the priests were responsible for making intercession to God for the people by offering the many sacrifices that the law required. Among the priests, one was selected as the High Priest, and he entered into the Most Holy Place once a year on the Day of Atonement to place the blood of the sacrifice on the Ark of the Covenant (Heb. 9:7). By these daily and yearly sacrifices, the sins of the people were temporarily covered until the Messiah came to take away their sins. In the New Testament, Jesus, as Great High Priest, offered a sacrifice to satisfy the Law of God when He offered Himself for our sins (Heb. 7:26-27). Unlike the Levitical priests, who had to continually offer sacrifices, Jesus only had to offer His sacrifice once, gaining eternal redemption for all who come to God through Him (Heb. 9:12).

Therefore

“For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people.” (Heb. 2:17)

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without  sin.” (Heb. 4:15)

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Heb. 4:16)

“Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, set your focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.” (Heb. 3:1)

Good Shepherd

Names of God

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11 NIV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Good Shepherd.

Good Shepherd - Jesus

Jesus called himself “Good Shepherd” and explained what it means to His sheep.

“The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock. The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me,  just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.” (John 10:12-15)

What the Good Shepherd does

“He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart. He gently leads the nursing ewes.” (Isa. 40:11)

“Then Jesus told them this parable: “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, comes home, and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep!’ In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.” (Luke 15:3-7)

Therefore

“For this is what the Lord GOD says: 'Behold, I Myself will search for My flock and seek them out.” (Ez. 34:11)

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1 )

Gate

Names of God

“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9 ESV)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Gate.

Gate

“Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:1-5)

Therefore

“Therefore Jesus said again, ‘Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’” (John 10:7-10)

Hear His Voice

“…he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice,Do not harden your hearts”  (Psalm 95:7-8a)

Faithful and True

Names of God

“Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war.” (Rev. 19:11 NLT)

God has many names and titles in the Bible. Each one tells us something important about Him—His character and how He relates to us. And how we must relate to Him. Here is another one of His many Names, which is Faithful and True.

Faithful and True

The word for “Faithful” in the original language means “characterized by steadfast affection or allegiance,” and the word translated “True” means “truthful or characterized by expressing the truth.” The nature of Jesus Christ, His whole being, exudes faithfulness and truth.

The name Faithful and True expresses the total trustworthiness, reliability, and constancy of Jesus Christ. The title reveals His character and makes known His words and works.

Jesus is a Faithful witness

“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.” (Rev. 3:14 NIV)

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,” (Rev. 1:5)

“And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,” (Rev. 3:7)

Therefore

“…He is coming—He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness.” (Palm 96:13)
